Good for the people, good for the planet

Bird is committed to enabling a more liveable, sustainable future by reducing gas-powered car trips, traffic, and carbon emissions.

We’re continuing to evolve with every facet of a more sustainable future and making the changes we need to bring our mission of making cities more livable to life and responsibly.

Eco-friendly transportation for all

More micro-electric vehicles can lead to fewer cars on the road, and fewer cars on the road means we’re reducing the amount of carbon emissions and traffic congestion across the globe.

In 2021, Bird riders had the same impact on carbon sequestration as one year of protecting 2.5 square miles of the Amazon rainforest. The end goal? Cleaner air, less traffic, and more joy—for everyone.

Meet Bird’s eco-friendly fleet

An important component of being climate friendly is how we design and engineer our vehicles. Our vehicles are designed in-house to be the longest lasting and most sustainable in the industry. We do this by:

As one of the only micromobility operators to design and engineer our vehicles in-house, we can test and innovate on new battery forms. Our latest models offer the longest lasting battery, which is monitored in real time by a Battery Management System (BMS), and offer the industry’s only IP-68 certified battery on the road. Longer rides mean more miles traveled, which yields more sustainable rides and decreased carbon emissions.

All of our vehicles are designed with sustainability and durability in mind. Built with an unrelenting focus on sustainability, everything about the Bird Three, like its battery system, smart acceleration technology, unrivaled durability, and more, make it the most eco-conscious e-scooter in the world.

Bird partners with organizations throughout the U.S. that enable us to recycle 100% of the metal, batteries, and e-waste from our vehicles.

An eco-friendly footprint

Healthier cities begin with sustainable mobility. That’s why we focus on an eco-friendly lifecycle—measuring, avoiding and reducing, and offsetting—to turn our vision into a reality.

01 Leading sustainably

Bird’s commitment to sustainability begins with reducing our own environmental footprint. We seek to consistently evolve policies within our facilities and operations to act consciously and sustainably.

02 United Nations Global Impact

Bird is proud to have been the first micromobility signatory of the United Nations Global Compact, a worldwide initiative encouraging companies to align strategies and operations with universal principles on human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption.

03 Carbon neutrality

Our operations became entirely carbon neutral in 2020, and we are committed to reducing emissions and environmental impact further.

04 Integrating with MaaS platforms

By integrating our app with MaaS platforms in certain areas, for example SNFC in France, we are making alternative modes of transportation more accessible and easy to use.

Using our data to inform sustainable infrastructure

We analyze our data to understand how and where people use our micro-electric vehicles to get around and use these insights to advocate for protected bike lane infrastructure that aims to make sustainable transportation safer for everyone. With our help, cities like Santa Monica, California, Atlanta, Georgia, and Tel Aviv, Israel, have made high-impact improvements to urban infrastructure based on the real-time needs of their inhabitants.

Measuring our climate impact

To accurately measure our emissions, we worked with Ramboll Consulting to conduct a life-cycle assessment (LCA) and calculate the total environmental impact of our scooters from manufacturing to end-of-life. We then compared the estimates from our life-cycle analysis against those of a similar independent exercise conducted by the International Transport Forum.

Offsetting for a positive legacy

With the help of 3Degrees, Bird has offset all greenhouse gas emissions associated with our shared scooter service. This includes all emissions from collecting, recharging and redistributing our vehicles, as well as our best estimates for those linked to manufacturing, shipping and recycling. Our carbon offsets are third-party verified using internationally recognized standards. Bird is committed to advancing the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. In particular, we aim to directly advance goals 9, 11, 12, and 13.

At Bird, we mitigate our emissions and environmental impact by:

  • Partnering with local utility companies to purchase green energy for charging our fleet.
  • Using e-vans and cargo trikes for collecting and redistributing our fleet.
  • Reducing carbon-intensive transport for employees, including remote work strategies.
  • Complying with applicable environmental laws and regulations.
  • Repurposing or recycling remaining parts with partners like the Landbell Group.
  • Testing innovative battery solutions, both integrated and swappable.
